Robert’s Story

Getting the right home care has made all the difference to the quality of life of White Oak client, Robert.

At 93 years old, Robert has had weekly cleaning and personal care services for the last few years. Being able to remain living independently and well in his own home has been made achievable by the consistent care that has been tailored to suit Robert’s individual needs. Tasks like cleaning his house, getting his groceries and helping with cooking allows Robert to live his life the way he wants.

“She doesn’t give 100%, she gives 110%” Robert says fondly of his Support Worker Kylie. It’s a beautiful partnership that extends beyond the standard duties of home care. “Kylie helps cook my meals and makes sure I have enough for dinner the next night so I’m very well-looked after”, he explains. “We talk while she makes my lunch and she is great company” he adds.

A lovely friendship has blossomed between Robert and Kylie. “We get along so well, she’s just like one of the family” he says.

Kylie will often take Robert for a walk to his local park where they can sit and chat by the river. It’s a place close to Robert’s heart as this spot was where he would often visit with his late wife, Dallas. “Kylie gets me out of the house and taking me to this special place is a way I can keep the memories of my wife alive”.

Robert has also been using White Oak’s Occupational Therapy services and with some minor home modifications, Robert’s house is now safer and more accessible.

Robert was visited by White Oak Occupational Therapist Ian, who was involved in repairing Robert’s front footpath after an earlier fall. Ian also assisted with the installation of rails next to his bed as well as ramps to the bathroom, making any trips during the night much easier and safer. “It’s been simply marvellous”, Robert commented on his increased accessibility.

Most recently, Ian was able to organise a new 3-wheel scooter for Robert. This has enabled him to navigate some uneven areas of his floor and has reduced any tripping hazards. “It’s been fantastic” Robert says. “I’m able to use this when I hang out the washing and I feel more secure as I move around”.

Robert says the familiar faces of White Oak staff have not only provided very welcome social companionship, but have improved his independence and living standard beyond what he thought was possible. “I’m so happy with White Oak” Robert says, “I tell everyone about them”.
