Lessons on Living Life Well: White Oak Client Ann Turns 100

White Oak Home Care Services client turns 100

Ann’s inspiring journey and tips and secrets to a long, healthy life.

White Oak client Ann recently celebrated her 100th birthday with a wonderful party organised by her family. A weekend away in Donnelly River allowed for the festivities to take place, where 50 members of her family gathered, including her twenty great grandchildren! Some travelled from as far as Scotland and Africa to help celebrate Ann’s milestone birthday.

Living Independently

Ann still lives at her home independently and receives home care services from White Oak a few times a week to help her remain living safely and well. She is without doubt an inspiration to all of us and manages perfectly well, along with her trusty dog Buster. Ann’s home is currently adorned with congratulatory cards and letters from The King, Prime Minister, Premier, Governor General of Western Australia and other local politicians.

Early Life

Born in Cologne, Germany in 1924 to Scottish parents, Ann’s early years were marked by the upheaval of the war. With her father stationed in Germany between conflicts to assist in the organising of the Olympic Games, the family later relocated to India where Ann experienced a vastly different way of life, complete with an entourage of servants.

It was in India where Ann met her husband and after the war, they returned to the UK. “I remember the long boat trip was particularly difficult, I was pregnant with my first child and had a combination of terrible morning sickness and sea sickness. Family members celebrated our arrival with a huge plate of prawns, which was certainly a delicacy then, but unfortunately the very last thing I wished to look at let alone eat with my being so unwell” Ann recalls, laughing.

Moving to Australia

Eventually in 1963 Ann and her family made the bold decision to emigrate to Australia. Bound for Fremantle, they settled in Perth and today Ann still lives in the house she first settled in.
