Introducing the New Support at Home Program: A Better Way to Support Your Loved Ones

Caring for an ageing loved one at home is about to become easier with the Support at Home Program, launching on 1 July 2025. This government initiative replaces existing home care programs, offering simplified, personalised, and more flexible aged care services. With eight funding levels, faster access to home modifications and equipment, and improved short-term and palliative care, it’s designed to help seniors maintain independence and quality of life in their own homes.

Below you’ll find information on the change from Home Care Packages to Support At Home, and how they can benefit your family, ensuring your loved one receives the personal care and support they need.

What’s Changing with the Support at Home Program?

The Support at Home Program replaces Home Care Packages aims to make aged care services more personalised, accessible, and effective. Here’s what your loved one can expect:

A More Seamless Support Experience

Instead of juggling different programs and funding options, everything will be brought under one streamlined system, making it easier to get the right quality care when it’s needed. This program is designed to enhance independent life at home with the right support.

Care That Matches Their Needs

With eight funding levels, the new program ensures your loved one receives exactly the level of care required—whether that’s occasional help with daily tasks or more intensive personal care. Funding will range from $11,000 to $78,000 per year to cover their needs and maintain quality care.

Faster Access to Equipment & Home Modifications

No more waiting to save up funds—under the new system, your loved one can access up to $15,000 upfront for important items like mobility aids, ramps, or safety rails, helping them stay safe and independent at home with the right support.

Improved Short-Term Restorative Care

For those recovering from illness, surgery, or a hospital stay, short-term care will now be extended from 8 to 12 weeks, giving your loved one more time and support to regain independence in their own home.

Better Support for End-of-Life Care

If your family member is facing a serious illness, the new program offers up to $25,000 over three months for palliative care at home, ensuring dignity and comfort in familiar surroundings while receiving quality care.

What Happens to Their Current Home Care Package?

If your loved one already receives Home Care Package services, there’s no need to worry—they will automatically transition to the new Support at Home Program on 1 July 2025. Any unspent funds in their package will carry over, and they will still have the flexibility to adjust their care plan as needed to support their independent life.
